Spring Broccoli Raab
Brassica rapa
Certified Organic
Microgreens Suitable
The perfect flavorful green to steam, chop, then saute.
For the sake of advancing the popularity of this gourmet green, it was dubbed Broccoli Raab, even though it's technically a tasty turnip top. Today, many gardeners expect this cool weather plant to produce a broccoli-like head. The small florets are edible, but in Asian and Italian cuisine the whole stem with leaves is used and valued for its bright, sharp broccoli-like flavor. For a great homemade pizza topping, sauté the Raab stems with minced garlic.
Growing instructions
Direct sow 2-3 weeks prior to the last frost. Thin to 4" apart for sturdier greens, or leave plants close together and cut them in bunches. Allow 20 days for baby, 40 for mature leaves. Succession sow 2 weeks apart for a steady harvest.
Broccoli Raab flowers quickly in late spring and through the summer. Best when grown in cooler temperatures to keep the flea beetle damage low and encourage leafy growth. Grow in rich soil and keep watered.
