Flax is more vigorous and versatile than its ephemeral stems and blooms make it seem. For one, it's blooms only last one day, which means that it's constantly producing more! Most common for home gardeners as an ornamental, flax is also valued for its seed and the oil from that seed (linseed oil). Plus, the fibers from its stringy stalks make a durable textile: linen.
