Winter Rye Cover Crop Seed
Secale cereale
Certified Organic
Amazing soil building capabilities.
Vigorous, cold hardy rye has amazing soil-building capabilities. Sow September-October. It begins growing during the cold months and puts on thick, green growth in the early spring. A great crop to increase organic matter. Rye does not winter kill and must be mown in the spring at flowering and then incorporated to kill the roots. Use hand tools on a small scale, but mechanical cultivation is recommended on larger plantings. Rye makes great mulch as well. Scythe the tops down at flowering and let dry in the sun, then use them as straw mulch. The timing works well to sow rye in a place you will be planting in late spring or early summer.
