Tussock Bellflower

Campanula carpatica

Grow a soft, blue cloud of romantic blooms.

AKA Carpathian Bellflower or Carpatic Bluebell. These billowy, blue-violet flowers appear in early summer and bloom continuously and abundantly up to the first frost. Native to elevated, mountainous habitats, these plants are perfect for borders, rock gardens, and even containers. The petite, pointed leaves grow in a neat basal mound, giving a tidy appearance. A perennial in Zones 2-7, most plants won’t produce blooms until the second year–but it’s well worth the wait.

Growing instructions
Cold stratification required: direct sow in fall or early winter into a clean, prepared bed. Or, for spring sowing, sow in deep seed-starting pots by pressing seeds into the surface of rich, damp soil. Cover and refrigerate for 4 weeks. Afterwards, move to a 70-degree, well-lit spot for germination, which can take up to 28 days. Keep soil moist but not wet until seeds have germinated. Light aids in germination. Transplant outdoors after frost. Tussock Bellflower performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. It's not too fussy about fertility, and will readily adapt to poor or rocky soils. Provide water when dry, and deadhead regularly for a long bloom season.
