Robert Hazelwood Dry Bean
Phaseolus vulgaris
Certified Organic
Grown on Our Farm
Speckled Beans from Kentucky
Originally from Clay County, Kentucky, this hard-to-find half runner dry bean is tan-colored with dark pointilist markings that cluster into a black spot. The beans have a slightly flattened rectangular shape. Though it can be grown as a bush bean, it will send out runners, so it does best if provided with support to grow vertically.
Growing instructions
Direct sow outdoors as soon as the threat of frost has passed. Sow seeds 1-2" apart, then thin to 3-6" apart. Protect with row cover fromfrost and bean beetles if necessary. This variety does best if provided with support for its tendrils to grow up. For best results, allow the beans to dry on the plant. Harvest beans when dry prior to the first fall frost. If weather does not permit this, pull the plants up at the last possible moment and hang to dry, then thresh the plants to remove the beans. Store in a cool, dry dark place.
