Oenothera lamarckiana
Certified Organic
Grown on Our Farm
Petals unfurl before your eyes and attract hummingbird moths.
This soft-yellow native biennial flower blooms in the evening, so fast that you can can watch it happening at dusk. We decided to grow this on the seed farm because it's sweet fragrance attracts night pollinators such as the hummingbird moth.
Some gardeners will not grow Evening Primrose because it easily self sows and can take over garden spaces. However, with care and attention you can prevent this plant from becoming invasive.
The seeds of Evening Primrose are often made into oil and used for medicinal purposes.

Growing instructions
Biennial. Direct sow in fall or early spring by scattering seeds directly on the soil. If started early enough, Evening Primrose will flower the same year it is planted. If not, let over winter and enjoy blooms in early spring. To start indoors, sow seeds very shallow. Needs light to germinate. Transplant 18 inches apart in early spring in full sun. Evening Primrose grows in poor conditions and tolerates draught like conditions. It does best in well-drained soil.
To prevent Evening Primrose from becoming invasive, dead-head the flowers daily as soon as they fade, or harvest the flowering stalk before it drops seeds. Failure to do so can result in many many plants in the years to come.
