Ruby Moon Hyacinth Bean
Certified Organic
Dolichos lablab
A rare, stunning, and vigorous climber for privacy and beautiful backdrops.
All plants add to a garden's magic. But some possess the power to make a garden completely enveloping. The vigorous vines of Hyacinth Bean reach higher than the tallest trellis, creating a lofty paradise of purple flower sprays and paisley pods that sway in the late-summer sky. This canopy beckons beloved aerialists ”hummingbirds and butterflies” to dance and swoop through the vines, zooming and hovering and weaving through the tendrils. Grow these vines over a fence, lie on your back, and enjoy the show.
A highly ornamental flowering vine with shimmering bronze foliage, fuchsia flowers, and shiny burgundy seed pods sets prolific beauty until late in the season. The perfect backdrop to changing fall foliage. Hyacinth Bean's height makes it a stunning plant to train on trellising in ornamental landscapes. The leaves, seed pods, and flowers are also popular in floral design work. Can also be grown in larger container planting.
NOTE: This variety is intended as an ornamental. Flowers can be steamed or eaten raw, but beans contain a trypsin inhibitor that can be toxic if the beans are not well-boiled before eating.

Direct sow 2-3 weeks after last frost. For earlier blooms, start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost date. Sow 1 seed per cell, using deep cells to accommodate the long roots. Transplant or direct sow after all threat of frost has passed. Provide a very sturdy trellis. Though a bit slower to take off than typical garden beans, Hyacinth Bean is very vigorous in the summer and can reach 8' high! Flowers and seed pods can be used in cut flower arrangements. NOTE: This variety is intended as an ornamental. Flowers can be steamed or eaten raw, but beans contain a trypsin inhibitor that can be toxic if the beans are not well-boiled before eating.
