Beauregard Sweet Potato Slips

Ipomoea batatas

Certified Organic

The fast, reliable, sweet potato for baking; a favorite for North and South.

This is the sweet potato that makes northern gardeners cheer. While 'Beauregard' is the most popular variety grown across the South, its true magic is its fast-maturing nature. Developed at Louisiana State University, it's a reliable, widely-adapted producer, capable of delivering a heavy harvest of #1 grade sweet potatoes in as few as 90-100 days. This speed makes it the top choice for home gardeners with shorter growing seasons. It dependably produces large, elongated roots with beautiful red-copper skin and is notably resistant to cracking.

Beyond its performance, 'Beauregard' is a delight in the kitchen. Its deep orange flesh has a fine-grained, creamy consistency when cooked, with a slightly sweet flavor reminiscent of winter squash. It's an outstanding choice for baking whole or making into pies. In the garden, the plants grow as a lush, beautiful vine (a relative of the Morning Glory!). For best results in cooler climates, we highly recommend growing them on black plastic mulch to capture extra soil warmth and ensure a bountiful harvest.

NOTE: Your sweet potatoes will arrive as bare-root "slips"—live sprouts ready to plant. Don't be alarmed if they appear wilted, dry, or pale from their travels; this is perfectly normal, and these slips are famously hardy. If you can't plant them immediately, you can store them for a few days by wrapping the root ends in a moist paper towel (keeping the leaves dry) and standing them upright in a glass at room temperature. If planting must be delayed a week or more, it's best to loosely plant the slips in a pot of moist soil and keep them indoors until you're ready.

Growing instructions
In late spring, after all frost danger has passed and soils have warmed to at least 65°F , plant sweet potato slips in a full-sun location. Slips may arrive wilted but are viable and should be planted immediately. Space plants 10-18 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart , preferably on raised ridges. Keep moist for the first few weeks and weed diligently until the vines establish. Harvest before or just after the first frost and cure roots at 80-85°F with high humidity to ensure long-term storage.
